About the Experience
Description
The OEL Climbing Wall is located in the Bucknell Field House and showcases a significant bouldering wall, Moonboard and training wall. The Climbing Wall is an inviting place on campus for new and seasoned climbers to practice their skills, share experience, and socialize. The Climbing Wall works to support students by consistently offering new and inventive climbing routes, as well as a variety of programs and educational clinics.
Climbing Wall Attendants are expected to supervise guests of the climbing wall during regularly posted open hours (in three-hour shifts), provide excellent customer service and risk management, and teach guests about use of the climbing wall space. Climbing Wall Attendants may also be asked to assist with occasional special events such as climbing competitions, black light climbing, clinics, etc.
Duties
As a staff member of the Bucknell Outdoor Education and Leadership (OEL) team, a Climbing Wall Attendant is first and foremost expected to foster a positive and engaging environment for individuals of all backgrounds. Other responsibilities include attending staff meetings, responding effectively to professional communication, ensuring guests fill out waivers before their first visit and sign in before every visit, maintaining risk management expectations and enforcing posted climbing wall rules, basic wall maintenance such as refilling chalk balls, tightening loose holds, organizing gear, and maintaining a tidy climbing wall space.
Minimum Qualifications
We are in search of motivated students, both eligible and not-eligible for work study, who are willing to begin training during the fall semester and continue on our team for every semester during their time at Bucknell. Prior experience and familiarity with climbing is welcomed, but not required for this position. By the end of training, new hires are expected to have a minimum basic knowledge of climbing technique and current routes in order to assist guests as they climb.
Work Hours
6-10 hours per week during the Fall and Spring Semesters with opportunities to work additional as needed. Hours may vary throughout the semester.
Compensation
$10.00/hour starting
