About the Experience
The OEL Climbing Wall is located in the Bucknell Field House and showcases a significant bouldering wall, Moonboard and training wall. The Climbing Wall is an inviting place on campus for new and seasoned climbers to practice their skills, share experience, and socialize. The Climbing Wall works to support students by consistently offering new and inventive climbing routes, as well as a variety of programs and educational clinics.
The Climbing Wall Student Operations Manager serves in a leadership role with direct oversight of daily climbing wall operations, student staff (climbing wall route setters and, to a lesser extent, attendants), and unique programming opportunities at the Climbing Wall. This position reports to the Director and Assistant Directors of OEL.
As a staff member of the Bucknell Outdoor Education and Leadership (OEL) team, the Climbing Wall Manager is first and foremost expected to foster a positive and engaging environment for all individuals and hold a demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice. Climbing Wall Manager job responsibilities are as follows:
-Manager will hire, supervise, and manage route setters
-Manager will represent the Climbing Wall at OEL Manager Meetings and collaborate with other OEL Managers on cross-divisional programming and committee work
-Manager is responsible for tracking route setter staff hours
-Manager is responsible for overseeing general cleanliness at the Climbing Wall, including cleaning and maintaining climbing wall holds and training equipment
-Manager will conduct semester inventory and equipment inspections
-Manager will attend weekly check in meeting with the Director or one of the Assistant Directors of OEL
-Manager will work closely with the Director and Assistant Directors of OEL on Climbing Wall related purchases
-Manager will attend meetings once every 3 weeks with OEL student managers, Director and Assistant Director
-Manager will assist in new hire and ongoing staff trainings of Climbing Wall route setting staff
-Manager will assist with other designated Climbing Wall tasks as needed
We are in search of motivated students, both eligible and not-eligible for work study, who are willing to begin work this fall semester and continue on our team for every semester during their time at Bucknell. Prior experience and familiarity with climbing is welcomed, but not required for this position. By the end of training, new hires are expected to have a minimum basic knowledge of climbing technique and current routes in order to assist guests as they climb.
6-10 hours per week during the Fall and Spring Semesters. Hours may vary throughout the semester.
